Go Slower

Go Slower

Larry Cohen, in addition to being a world class bridge player and teacher, is an excellent charades player. I know this because when I began teaching with Larry, he would act out the same clue every time I spoke. Some variation of "SLOOOOOWWWEEEERRR". Hands slowly stretching. Himself running in slow motion. Running in place quickly and giving a big thumbs down. He had many gestures.

The problem is that I wanted to move too fast. I spoke quickly and I moved on to the next subject quickly. In order to learn, students have to hear something clearly (and slowly), and usually more than once.

As bridge learners (and teachers) we need to give ourselves time to really understand a concept.
